Box Stories – Tony Fegan, Director Tallaght Community Arts
Tony Fegan director of Tallaght Community Arts talks with Katrina Goldstone, Create about BOX STORIES, a project that invited people, from all ages, genders, cultures and backgrounds in South County Dublin to participate in the creative exploration of self expression and, ultimately, to celebrate the diversity of the South County Dublin community.
Fegan discusses the impetus behind the project; the issue of engagement with local communities and the longterm impact of the project.
“One of the goals of BOX STORIES was to encourage participating groups to ‘get up on their box’ and express what they wanted to say to the world and share this with others in their community, using the soapbox as a mode of communication."
Ninety specially customised boxes were displayed as an installation in Tallaght County Library to mark the culmination of the project. The boxes were exhibited at Tallaght Library from 11th October to 23rd October and then toured to branch libraries; Ballyroan, Clondalkin, Lucan, Castletymon, Whitechurch and Stewart’s Library, Palmerstown before returning to participating groups.
The boxes are a testimony each group’s ingenuity in responding to the 3 guiding questions: Who are we? Where are we? What do we want to say?Particpants were encouraged "to ‘get up on their box’ and express what they wanted to say to the world"
